気をつけて防除をしていたつもり
だが、ひとつの畑で今日ベトを発見。ベトは葉の裏側に
羽毛様(downy)の白い毛のようなものが広がる病気で
葡萄の葉を落とし、木を枯らせてしまう。
初期段階では葉の表面にオイルスポットと呼ばれる
斑点が見られる。

例年よりかなり早く出た。梅雨に入り、連日高温
で雨が続いたせいか。

木酢液を使えば農薬使用量を6割に減らせる
ということが本に書いてあったので、そうして
いたのだが、早めのボルドーの方が良かったかな。

I have tried to spray with care but I found downy
mildew in one of the vineyards. White short hair like
symptom is found at the bottom of leaf
in case of downy mildew infection which leads to the
defoliation and to kill the vines. At the beginning,
oil spot is usually found in the leaf surface.

It occurred earlier this year. It may be because of the
higher temperature and rain during rainy season.

I reduced the chemicals to 60% of the subscription with
the addition of wood vinegar in accordance with certain
article in a book. But I should have sprayed Bordeaux
instead.

今朝は予期せぬ雨で、
防除が延期になった。
昨日の雨の影響と、今晩の
ワールドカップを考えると
明日の朝より今日済ませたかった
のだが。

午前中に雨がやみ、暑い時間に
防除の音があちこちから聞こえた。
私は、昨日の痛い経験があるので
暑い時間は避けて明日の朝に延期とした。

Unexpected rain this morning made me
put off the spraying till tomorrow morning.
Due to the rain yesterday and the broadcast
scheduled tonight, I wanted finish spraying
within today.

The rain stopped during the morning and the
sound of fans of sprayers were able to be heard
here and there. As I experienced the hardness of the
spraying during warm hour, I decided not to do during
daytime and plant it tomorrow morning again.

早朝から葡萄の防除を始めたのだが、9時頃に
雨が降り始め、勢いを増す。
この時期こういうこともある。
雨が上がって、葉っぱも乾いてから
続きをやったのだが、雨の前に打った
分はどうしようか。悩ましいところ。
別の薬液で再防除だな。

夕刻4回目の田んぼのチェーン除草。
草は生えています。それなりに。
このやり方、水位を高めに保つことが
重要のようだ。水の引きやすい
田んぼだと難しいのかな？

I started spraying the vines early this
morning but it started raining at around
9am and it got heavier. It happens during such
rainy season.　I resume spraying after it stopped
raining and the leaves dried. But how about the
vineyards I sprayed before rain? I may use
other substances and spray again in a few days.

In the late afternoon, I did 4th chain mowing
in the rice paddy. Weeds can be spotted here and
there. It seems that we need to keep water level
higher for this method otherwise the weed cannot
be easily removed by dragging chain in the paddy.

まだ小さい葡萄の粒を指でひねって
抜いてゆく。根気の要る作業。
まだ、成木が多くないので週末で終える
ことができた。

In the cloudy and rainy weather, I did
bunch thinning of Nagano Purple grapes.
Baby berries are removed by snapping with
two fingers (thumb and index). It needs a lot
of patience. As I don’t have many grown up
vines yet, I was able to do over this weak end.

More and more works are waited everyday
for this season.

土壌改良目的で植えたライ麦。
穂をはらむようになって草刈、
その後同じくらいになって2度目の
草刈。ライ麦が生えている間は
草が伸びないし、草刈の後は
うまい具合にマルチになって
今のところは草を抑えていてくれる。
これからの夏草はどうなるかな。
来年はほかの畑でもライ麦を
蒔いてみようと思っている。

I planted rye last year in order to
ameliorate the soil structure. I mowed
them this spring once when they had ears
and they grew again to the same height when
I mowed for the second time.
While rye were there, weed cannot grow and
after mowing they become nice mulching for
weed control.
So far, so good. I am thinking to plant rye
in the other vineyards this winter.

一番目。これは簡単。
この近所でも自家用に栽培されているのを
よく見ます。　すでに形が出来上がっています。
山葡萄に良く似た葉っぱです。

二番目。これは難しいかも。
今日山に採りに行ったある植物の葉っぱ。
これを干して、似て、繊維をとって
蕎麦のつなぎに使います。

三番目。今日の暮れ方。
このあと、雲だけがサーモンピンクに
染まりました。

First, it is easy. They are grown often around here.
The shape is already near complete. I always think its
leaves resemble to those of wild grape.

Second, it may be difficult. The were picked in the
nearby mountain today. They are dried, boiled and the
fibers are used for soba making.

Third, the moon at sunset time rose over the mountain.
The clouds all over the sky became salmon pink in color
later on.

去年植えたメルローが順調に育っている。
虫にやられた樹も何本かあるが、今年から
少々収穫ができる樹もある。
午前中の雨も上がって午後は
そのメルローの畑の草刈り。
カナブン（ブイブイ）が一心不乱に
花の蜜をあさっていた。

Merlot planted last year are growing
sound. Some of them were damaged by
hole borer worms but some bear fruit.
In the afternoon, after an unexpected rain
this morning, I was mowing weeds
while I found a beetle busy sucking honey.

去年植えた山葡萄に少し実がついた。

将来は山葡萄ジュースか山葡萄ワインに
する予定。これからが楽しみ。

入梅してから雨らしい雨は二日ほど。
天気予報でも雨マークは控えめだ。

I have some fruit on wild grapes which I planted
last year. They are supposed to be juice or wine
in the near future. I wonder what kind of wine style
it would be.

We have only two days of raining this rainy season.
Even in the recent weather forecast, umbrella marks
do not occur so often as expected in normal year.

昔このあたりは桑畑が多く
小学校からの帰りがけに桑のみを
摘んで食べたものだ。
黒く熟しているのだが、さして
甘くもなく、絶好のおやつ
というわけには行かなかった。

その桑畑が消え、りんご畑になり
葡萄畑になっている。
昔須坂は製糸の街として
にぎわい、ここら辺の農家は
みな桑を育てて蚕を飼って
いたものだ。そのころできた
蔵が今でも残っているのだが、
日本で一番新しい蔵作りの
町並みだそうだ。

There used to be many mulberry fields around here
and we used to pick mulberries on the way back from
primary school. They were ripe and black in color but
they were not so sweet for kids’ taste.

The mulberry fields had gone and became orchards of
sour apples which have now become fuji apple orchards
and grape vineyards.

Suzaka was once prosperous with silk industry
and the farmers here grew mulberry trees to
feed silk worms with the leaves. The Kura buildings,
Japanese warehouse made by earth were used for
the worm growing still remain here. It is said that
here are the newest kura streets in Japan

この季節、早朝4時半には畑ではすでに
防除が始まっているし、葉っぱが朝露を乗せて
いるのもかまわずにプラムの袋掛けやら、
りんごの摘果をしている人が出ている。
朝6時前、薬調センターにはssの順番待ちが
できている。

ようやく果物の季節が始まる。
例年より遅れがちなさくらんぼの
直売所にもひっきりなしに人が
訪れる。

This time of the year, the spraying starts early
in the morning at 4:30. Fruit growers are already
in work for wrapping plums and fruit thinning
of apples despite of the wet leaves of morning dew.
Here are spraying vehicles queuing up for their turn
at the spray station.

It’s the beginning of fruit season, too. Farmer’s shop is busy
with the returning customers for cherry which is a bit
delayed this year.

これは、なんとナガノパープルの花。
ほぼ満開です。房きりをせずにそのまま
房全体の花が咲くとこんな感じ
に見えます。円筒形にも見えます。

These are the flowers of Nagano Purple almost
in full bloom. I was late for bunch forming of
this variety and whole bunches are now in bloom.
They look cylindrical, don’t they?

７日からはじめた巨峰の房きりが今日ようやく終わった。
新しく借りた畑もあるが、かなり樹を切ったので
合計では少し減った計算になる。この間雨で
まったくできなかったのが昨日だけだった。
天気にも恵まれて順調に終わった。
良かった良かった。さて、これでパープルと
ワイン葡萄の方に取り掛かる。明日から
一週間雨マークが続いている。
さて、どうなることやら。

I have completed bunch forming of kyoho grapes
which I had started on June 7. It took me 11 days this
year. I borrowed new vineyard but as I cut down five
big vines, I had fewer vines this year. Thanks to the
fine weather, I had only yesterday which I was not able
to do the operation. Now I feel comfortable without the
pressure of this operation. Then I can start the operation
on Nagano Purple grapes and winegrapes.
By the way, the rain is forecasted for one week from
Tomorrow. I wonder what will happen now.

先月刈ったライ麦が
また穂をはらむまで
大きくなった。
朝方の大雨が昼ころには
霧雨になり、午後遅くなって
晴れ。2回目の草刈りをやる。

そのメルローの畑では
花が咲き始めた。
さて、巨峰の房きりは
明日で終わるかな。

The rye has grown again to
the height having ears.
It rained heavily in the morning,
turned to be drizzling at noon and
it became very fine in the late
afternoon. So I mowed again.

In the same Merlot vineyard, the
flowering started. I wonder if I can
finish the bunch forming operation
of Kyoho grapes.

入梅した今日。夕刻になって
街が夕焼け色に染まった。
坂田のトンネルから出たあたりから
北信五岳方面を望む。

We got into the rainy season today.
In the evening, whole town was in
sunset color. The picture was taken
at around the Sakata tunnel towards
Hokushin Gogaku or Five Mountains
of North Shinshu.

今日は早朝から畑が賑やかであった。
明日から何日間か雨の予報が出ていたうえ、
遅れ気味の葡萄とりんご用の農薬散布の
時期が重なったのだ。
私も週明けを予定していた散布を
急遽切り上げて、昨日と今日やった。

多くの農家が農協の薬剤調整センターで
ｓsのタンクを満たして行くのだが、
5時で5台待ち、2回目には20分待ち
だったそうだ。

去年は雨のせいでタイミングがずれて
だいぶ病気が出たので、今年は皆より
気をつけているのだ。

The orchards and vineyards around here
were full of sounds of spraying since very
early morning today. Because the rainy days
in a row from tomorrow were forecasted
and the scheduled spraying for
apples and grapes came at the same time.

I had to advance my scheduled spraying from
next week to yesterday and today.

Many farmers filled their sprayers tanks at the JA
chemical preparation centre. Some said that there
were five spray cars waiting already at 5am and they
had to wait for 20 minutes for second round.

Everybody has become more cautious this year because
we had disease last year due to the bad weather.

7日から房きりをはじめてあっという間に
一週間になる。大体2週間で済ませなければ
ならない。雨が降ってもやらねばならない。

で、いつものことですが、
房きりのビフォー、アフター。
粒粒を13段くらい残してあとは切除
し、房の先端を切る。

One week has almost passed as if in just
one day since we started on 7th. Fusakiri
should be finished within two weeks so
rainy day does not matter.

As always, these are the before and after
of Fusakiri. We have only around 13 small clusters
left and the other should be removed with cutting
off the tip of the baby bunch.

ほとんどの人はまず見たことが
ないでしょ。葡萄の花。花弁が無いので
とても地味です。

でも香りは強く、「あ、花が咲いたな」と
すぐに分かります。20％が咲いたら開花という、
という基準からすると、まだ開花前ですが、
咲き始めました。いわゆるとび花です。

Most of the people have seen the flower of grape.
As it does not have petals, it is not outstanding at
all.

But it has very high scent and you can tell easily if
it is in bloom or not. Based on the 20% flowering rule,
Kyoho has not attained flowering yet but the flowering
has just started. It is called first flower.

毎日天気になると確かに暑いのだが、
必ず朝は曇っていて涼しいし
昼間だって結構曇りがちだ。
そして何より風が吹くと
とても気持ちが良い。
さて、明日は入梅予想が
出ていたのだが、そうは
いかないようで、今年は
カラ梅雨かな。

だいぶ緑が濃くなりました。

巨峰の房きりを始めて明日はもう
金曜日。ほんと、もうと思うくらい
とっても早い一週間でした。

It is warm when it shines during the day but
it is almost always cloudy in the morning
making it feels so cool. It does not shine
often so far this month and it is very
pleasant with breezing.

Tomorrow is the day the rainy season
is supposed to start however but it is
not actually. It may be dry rainy season
this year.

It’s already Thursday today. We started
husakiri, bunch forming operation of
kyoho, on Monday. Six days have passed
so quickly as usual.

思いがけない夕立があった。
午後4時ころからパラパラときて
降るのか止むのかという程度だったのが
雨脚が意外と伸びた。
午後6時ころには明るくなって
東の空に大きな大きな虹がかかった。
吉兆だろう。

We had unexpected shower this afternoon.
It started at around 4pm and we wondered if
it would continue to rain or stop quickly. But
it really rained for two hours. At around 6pm
the sky became clear and there we found a
big, big rainbow in the east. It must be a
good omen.

借りた田んぼの水もちがよくなくて
果たして無事収穫ができるのだろうか
と心配になってくる。

と、それはさておき。田植えから一週間後
の一昨日の日曜日に一回目のチェーン除草を
行った。インターネットで調べて
自作したチェーン除草具を田んぼで
引っ張る。1メートル50ほどだが、
田んぼの中では意外と軽い。
2メートルでも良かったな。
今のところちょっといい気分。
除草剤無使用米がうまくとれるといいな。

こういうものです。

作業中スタリオンという言葉が
頭を駆け巡る。

The rice paddy we are borrowing cannot
keep water for long time and it makes me
worry about the successful harvest.

Any how, I used my own chain mower in the
paddy last Sunday. I check the mower in the
internet and made one by myself. It is 1m50cm
long and weighs about 10kg but it seems lighter
in the water filled paddy due to the material
I used. I may be able to handle one with 2m long.
So far I am happy with the result of the mower.
I look forward to harvesting the rice grown without
herbicide.

A word stallion goes around in my head.

Here are two red wines to be released as of
June 15.

Pinot Noir 2008
It implies the future figure of Pinot Noir
of Northern Shinshu. It has eminent fruit
aroma with very firm body. Its vigor and
youthfulness may require a few years of
maturation.

Passage Rouge 2008
Passage means the pathway. It is the
wine happened to be made on the way
to the targeted style of wine. Despite of its
lighter color, it has gorgeous aroma and is
full of umani on the palate. It tastes really
good and can go along with any kind of food.
A wonder wine.

You can drink very easily.

夏の農作業やss(スピードスプレイヤー)での
防除の際、とても暑く熱中症になるのではと
思うことが時々ある。何とか体を冷やす良い方法
がないものかと、濡れタオルや保冷材をタオルで
首に当てたりとしていたが、いたって不便。
特にワイン葡萄の畑は巨峰と違って日陰が
ないのでたまりません。

そこでたまたま見つけたのがマジクールという
気化熱で冷感を得られる商品。マフラー状の綿の
入れ物の中にポリマーが入っていて、それが
水を吸収・保持するので、濡れることがない。
首に巻いたままにして置けるので
つけているのを忘れるほど。

まあ、氷水を頭にかぶるというようなわけにはいかないが
それでも、ずいぶんと違う。で、農作業に
従事する人や、特にワイン葡萄の栽培仲間に是非紹介したいと
販売元にお願いして長野県での販売代理権を頂いた。
全国的にも販売できます。別に私からで
なくても、もちろん販売元からも買えますよ。

It gets so hot when I work outside during summer
and when I have to spray on the machines that I
would fall sick. I have looked for something that
can cool down my head and body. I have tried
we towel or coolant wrapped in the towel but they
were inconvenient. In the winegrape vineyards, the
heat is always problem because there is no shade
while overhead trellis has shade beneath.

I happened to find a merchandize called MagiCool which
Provide lower temperature due to the water vaporaization.
It is a scarf-like cotton container with polymer inside
which absorbs water without leaking. It does not
wet clothes and leave it wrapping around the neck.

It is not super efficient like water with ice but it
can make certain difference. As such, I want to
introduce to the farmers and winegrape growers
who suffer from the heat as I do. I asked the sales
company and was granted an exclusive sale right
in Nagano Prefecture as well as non-exclusive
sales right in other part of Japan. Of course,
you can buy one from the original sales company
if you want. My purpose of this goods is not for
doing business but to introduce to the people who
are in the similar situation as mine. Now I am
negotiating with JA to sell it through their route
to the farmers.　As over 2 million pieces have been
sold so far, you may have used it already.

It costs 699yen per piece. I put on my webshop soon.
It seems efficient in the dry air-conditioned room
or even inside the kitchen, too.

午後はいい天気でした。

Merlot as of today.
It was a fine afternoon.

昨夜は、今朝早朝の防除のために
早く寝てしまいました。そしたら
なんと、目覚めたら濡れている！
夕べやはり雨が降ったか。
乾いてからにしようと…。

昨日はピノの緑枝接木。
大分慣れたせいか、手際よく
なったような。

I went to bed early last night for the
spraying very early this morning. But
it was wet in the morning due to mid night
rain. I decided to go out for spraying later
after drying.

Yesterday I spend half a day for green grafting
of Pinot Noir. I seemed to improve on such technique
and the operation was rather smooth.

今日ナガノパープルの栽培講習会。
日滝地域の葡萄部会員約110名の半分以上が
集まった。正直驚き。それだけ、成木になって
きたということか。　以前は20-30人だったのに。
おかげで狭い農道が軽トラでいっぱいになった。

種無しで皮ごと食べられ、しかもさっぱりした
甘さのおいしい葡萄、ナガノパープル。
私も今年は、収量が増えるはずです。
栽培は、難しいといえば難しい。
おいしいのがたくさんできればいいなあ。

We had Nagano Purple grape growing technique session
today. Out of over 110 members of grapegrowers, about 60 people
gathered for the session. It was a surprise to see so many people
for the first time. I wonder if it means there are many people
having grown up vines today. It used to attract only 20-30
farmers. Because of the attendants, the narrow street was filed
with small utes.

It is seedless grape with the crisp skin which can be eaten
without peeling. The tastes was sweet but not sticky. I should
be able to harvest more than last year. The grapegrowing
is not easy at all. I hope I can harvest a lot this year.

シャルドネは、かなりボディのしっかりした
味の濃いワインです。先日のワイン東京でも
おいしいという声をたくさんの方から
頂きました。グラスの中で香りが
開くのにやや時間がかかる反面、香り味とも
力強さがあり、抜栓直後より時間を
置いた方が一層おいしく感じられます。
少々ダイヤモンドが出ていますがデキャンタして
頂くと気になりません。

セミヨン/SBは、2008よりいっそうドライ
で、今はSBの香りが高いワインです。
いまでもおいしいですが、もう少し
瓶熟期間をおいた方がよりおいしくなります。
秋を過ぎてから年末以降が楽しみですね。
このワイン60％がセミヨンです。ですから
3年くらい寝かせるとセミヨンの特徴が
発揮されて、今とは違ったおいしさが
味わえます。

Two of the newly released wines passed
sensory tasting of Nagano Appelation Control
yesterday. They are;
Chardonnay 2008
750ml \3,360.-
and
Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc 2009
750ml \2,940.-

Chardonnay is has very firm body and thick
on the palate. It was received very favorably
at the latest Wine Tokyo 2010 in Tokyo by
and among the professional tasters.
It needs longer time for its aroma to open but
its aroma and taste is very firm. You may like
it after a while of opening the bottle, say the
next day. The wine shows some diamonds but
you may not notice it after decanting.

Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc 2009 is drier than
that of 2009. Now it has prominent clear aroma
of SB. The wine is good now and will become
tastier after a while, say after this autumn
to the end of the year. As its 60%
is Semillon, you can taste different and beautiful
taste after three years of bottle maturation.
Please try this wine with any Japanese food. You will
find the marriage perfect.

6月に入った。気温の低い日が続いて
いたので、巨峰の房きりはまだ始まらない。
来週くらいからかな。

去年あたりから畑でカラスノエンドウを
増やしている。窒素の供給のためだ。
今年は種を取って、まだ少ない畑に
蒔こうと思っている。

昨日採った黒くなったサヤを机の上においておいたら
今朝様子がおかしい。サヤが二つに割れて
それぞれがらせん状になり、中の種が
飛び出して散らかっていた。こんな風に
種を飛ばすのか。残されたさやは自然の造形美。

It’s the first day of June. Because of the
lower temperature in previous months,
it’s still too early to begin bunch forming,
fusakiri. We may start it early next week.

I have tried to grow more natural tare in my
vineyards since last year. I collect seeds this year and
spread them in the vineyards for Nitrogen supply.

I left the pods on the desk yesterday and
found the seeds spread all over. The pods
split in helical shape to spread seeds. I was
amazed at such methods of the pods and
was impressed with the beauty of the shape.

長梢剪定の新梢の状況。
枝の先端（左端）の方の新梢の方が
長くて勢いがいいのがわかりますか？

枝の先端の芽が先に発芽して、それが
植物ホルモンを作り出して、それより
下（根元に近い方）にある芽の成長を
妨げるからこうなると言われています。

葡萄はつる植物なので、放っておくと巻きひげで
何かにつかまって太陽を求めて
上に上に向かって行く性質があります。
それで新梢の成長が不ぞろいなんです。

The picture shows the new shoots
growth on a cane. You can see the longer
and more vigorous shoots at the tip of
the cane (left).

Bud on the cane tip burst first which produce
certain plant hormone to restrict the growth of
the lower buds. Therefore shoots growth is so
different.

As the grape is the vine plant which tends to
grow upwards for sun shine by
grabbing support with its tendrils,
therefore cane tip shoot grows first and
which consequently result in the different
shoot growth.
