楠ワイナリー　

今日遠来の客人があった。
超有名なワイナリーのワインメーカー。
日本ではめったに手に入らないワインを
造っている。　その姿勢は徹底していて、
気に入らないワインは瓶詰めをしない、
或いは廃棄してしまうというほど。

そこのチーフワインメーカーの方に
シャルドネ2008を飲んで頂いた。
「正直驚いた」という評価。
ピノ・ノワール2007も「とっても
自然でレベルが高い」と。

単純な私は素直に喜んで
しまいました。

ありがとうございました！

I have a guest coming from a distance
today. He is a winemaker at a very
famous winery of which wines are most
sought after and we rarely can get here.
Their standard is very high and they just
do not bottle the wines they don't like
and sometime they just abolish them
just because they do not like them even
though they themselves made them.

The chief winemaker tasted my Chardonnay
2008 which is to be released in July-August
and said they were surprised at the quality.
It seemed he recognized the potentiality
of Hitakihara fan here.
He also appreciated my Pinot Noir 2007
saying that it was made in a very natural
way.

I simply was very much delighted and
thankful with his comments.

今晩（30日）市内の老舗割烹
能登忠で行われたワイン会。
最近はワインを用意する方で
しか出番はなかったが、今日は
丸本酒店さんが当番なので
料理とワインとおしゃべりを
楽しむことができた。

ワインはシャンパーニュで始まり、
チリのトレス・パラシオスの
ソーヴィニオン・ブランとメルロー、
ブルガリアのエニーラ（メルロー
が主）に、Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots 1995
Domain Joseph Voillot,
卓尾はChateau Montroses 1995 Saint-Estephe。

チリ等のワインは最近安くて美味しいのが
出ていて、こういのが1,000円台で売られると
困るな～というのが第一印象。ただ、きれいに
問題なくできていても、物足りなさがあるし、
これを飲み続けられるかというと
そういうものでもない。やはり、土地の特徴
が反映されていたり、くせみたいなものというか、
自己主張が欲しい。また、
厚みや複雑さがイマサンくらいな感じだった。
そういう意味では少々安心ではあるのだな。

最後の2本は同じ1995年ヴィンテージで、
丸本さんが購入し保存していたものが
出てきた。まず普通には手に入らないでしょうね。
Pommard　は飲み頃の後半に来ている感じで、
Montroseは飲み頃になるのはもう少し先という
感じで、まだまだ若々しく香りも素晴らしく
花開くという感じでもない。
同じヴィンテージなんだけど、この違い。
この辺がワインの面白さでもあるのだけれど…。
随分前に飲んだ28年物のグランジがやはり
若々しくて驚いたことがある。
こんな飲物ってほかに無いよね。

I attended a wine tasting meeting
tonight held at the most prestigeous
restaurant in Suzaka. Because Marumoto
bottle shop arranged teh wine, I did not
need to take care of the guests and I was
one of the guests. I was able to enjoy
food, wines and the chatting.

With opening of a Champange, Chilean
Tres Palacios's Sauvignon Blanc
and Merlot were served followed by
Bulgarian Enira. The last two were
Pommar 1er Cru Les Epenots 1995 and
Chateau Montrose 1995.

The Chilean wines were fine and
they were really good wines for the
price of around 1,000 yen per bottle.
They were clean and fine with no problem
but they lack something and I may not be
able to finish a few glasses. I felt firmly that
wines need to relfect the locality and should
have something telling itself. The length and the
complexity were also weak therefore they are
different from my wines which made me felt a bit
relieved.

The last two wines were the same vintage of
1995 which Marumoto bottle shop bought
long time ago and kept them at the shop.
One cannot get these vintage any more.
Pommar seemed to come to the last part of
the highest portion of the quality curve.
On the other han, Montrose was vivid
and would need more years to reach
its highest quality point. The aroma
was not outstanding and would need
a few more years to go. How different
these wines were even though they were
same vintage! It is an interesting
point in wine tasting, I believe.
I rememberd a Grange that I tasted many
years ago. The wine was already 28 years
old and was still vivid and showed much
of fresh fruit aroma which was really
surprising to me. Is there any
beverage to enjoy like this ?

降る中をご丁寧に畑とワイナリーを
長時間ご案内頂き、感謝感謝です。

小規模、家族経営のワイナリーですが、
現在全てのワインが完売しているという
人気のワイナリーです。
葡萄は、垣根とスマートマイヨルガーに
よる棚栽培。また、醸造は高価な設備を
使わずに始めたという、とても参考に
なるワイナリーです。

誠実で着実なワイン作りと経営が
印象的です。きっと大変な思いも
経験されたはずですが、それを
感じさせない爽やかさと、ワインの]
高い品質が人気の秘密でしょうか。

I visited Kido Winary in Shiojiri
yesterday. I was so grateful with
Mr.Kido's kind introduction of the
vineyards and the winery in the cold
rain while he was very busy.

It is a small sized and family run
winery but all of the wines are
sold out at the moment. Such a popular
winery in Nagano. They grow grapes by
VSP and some by overhead trellis system
called Smart-Miyorgar. They started the wine
making without costly equipments which is
a very good example for me.

Their honest and steady wine making
and the management is very impressive. They
should have gone through hard time, I believe,
but their attitude towards the wine quality
and the sincerity to the customers should be
the secret of their success.

Thank you very much again.

昨日からコンピューターが不調で
エクスプローラーが開けない、或いは
スムーズに開けない状態が続いて
いる。今日はどうかな。

今朝（27日）も冷え込み、空気が澄んでいた。
畑から西にくっきりとアルプスが見える。
その右側には北信五岳が北へ並んでいる。

It was another cold morning and the
air was very clear. Facing to the west,
I can see clearly the Japan Alps and
the famous five moutains in north
Shinshu< Hoskushin Gogaku.

今日は気温が低い上に寒風が吹いて、
天気はいいのだが、なかなかはかどらない
一日だった。

こういう日に1時間でも2時間でも
畑にでるのがいいのか、それとも
別のことをしていた方がいいのか
悩むところだ。畑に出ないと何か
罪悪感を感じてしまうし、かといって
能率の悪いことをしているような
疑問も出てくるし。

冬の間に取れるまとまった時間を
有効に使えたらと思うのだが、畑に
でなかったら無為に過ごして
しまうのだろうな。それだったら
畑に出ていた方がいいような。
小心者の煩悩は尽きない。

It was cold today. Even though
it was a fine day, I was not able
to cheer up myself in the vineyard
due to the cold wind.

On such a day, I always wonder if
it is good to work outside even
for one hour or two, or if I should
do something eles. If I did not go
out to the vineyrds, I would feel
guilty while I feel I work very
inefficiently.

I wish to use such a lump of time
in winter efficiently but I would
waste the time if I did not go out
to work. If so, it would be better
to be out there. These are the
worries to a little thing.

雪が溶けると、
畑のそこかしこに
土を盛ったようなマウンドが
沢山できている。
モグラかな。
何のために？
出入り口にしては多すぎるような。

シーズン中は草が伸びるし
しょっちゅう草刈をするので
気づかないが。冬の間は
地面に何も生えないので
よく目立つ。
冬眠はしないのか。

I can see many small mounds
eleswhere in the vineyard.
Did the moles make them ?
What for ? I thought there
were too many for the entrance.

I rarely find one during the
growing season of the grape
as the ground was covered with
weeds and mowing may have destroyed
them without noticing. But in winter,
such mounds are very apparent.
Aren't the moles in the cybernation
now?

素晴らしい天気と素適な方々とのツアーで
心地よい充実感とかなりな疲労に浸っております。
次回は足手まといにならぬように練習して
おきます。

There held a wine tasting session
with the tour members of a ski school.
It was Club TMN Ski School tour's
wine session. The school is run by
Mr. Mochizuki at Minenohara Kogen
Heights for telemark skiers.

The wines are all my wines and many of
the shcool members participated
in the harvest and the vine planting
event before.

On the following 24th which was today, I joined
them to a Nekodake tour. Of course, it was a
telemark ski tour!. Most of the members
used narrow ski and leather boots which is more
difficult than normal ski and plastic boots.
I used of course broader ski and plastic boots.
Thanks to the very fine weather and wonderful
company, I feel very satisfied with heavy
fatigue now. Next time, I will have prepared
in advance so that I will not make them waited
for me.

思わぬことって、驚きだったり
嬉しかったことだったりする。

今日午後長野県のグリーンツーリズム関係
の講演会とシンポジウムがあった。
講演はダニエル・カール氏、山形弁の
変な外人。と言ってしまえばそうなのだが、
日本文化への深い理解と洞察に立ち、
日本の停滞する現状、閉塞感からの
脱却の方法を明快に信念を持って
開陳してくれた。日本人が美徳としてきた
謙遜の程度が行過ぎている。バランスが崩れて
いるのだ、それが自分や自分の周りにあるもの
からひいては地域や社会の誇るべきものまで
卑下して自信をなくしている。１億人以上の
国家としてこれほどの発展した社会を
築き上げているというのに。
と、とても勇気付けられる内容。
皆さん自信を持ちましょう、地元にある大事なものを
大いに自慢しましょうと。
講演後に大きな拍手が何度も起こったのは、
問題意識の高い人たちが多かったからだろう。

（漫談調ではありますが…熱い！）

続いて行われたパネルディスカッションも
理想と現実の板ばさみの中で模索しながらも
地域やコミュニティーの中で、何かを築き上げよう
と努力してきて、今も奮闘中の人たちによるものだったので
その熱い想いが伝わってくるものであった。

私が出たのは、これで４年目か５年目になるが、
今までで一番内容の濃い講演会＆シンポジウムであった。
そしてやる気を喚起するものであった。
残念なのは、今までで一番参加者が少なかった
様に思えることだ。

夜は、友人と長野市にできたイタリアン・レストラン
「オステリア・ガット」を訪ねた。その料理と
心遣いに感服。長野でも美味しいところが
できていますよ～と声を大にしてお知らせしたい。
今度はもっとゆっくりたっぷりと食事に
行きますね。

たまたま持っていったシャルドネ2008をお店の方と
試飲してしまった。３週間前より大分良くなって
いて少し安心した。それにしても、後世畏るべし、
と恐れ入ってしまった夜でした。

When I face an expected situation,
I always find it an astonishing or
something heartwarming.

This afternoon, I attenden a talk and
a symposium organized by Nagano Green
Tourism Conference. A talk was presented
by Daniel Carl, a funny Yamagata diarect
speaking foreigner. He certainly is but
having long and deep understanging an thoughts
of Japanese culture, he talked enthusiastically
about the today's Japanese stucking
and lower sprited situation and gave us suggestions
how to get it over with firm belief.
He said, modesty-a long time virture among the Japanese-
went too far from its limit and lost the balance with
pride which finally lead to look down on ourselves
and the things among us including the traditions
and the local society despite that the Japanese
have established such a developed society for
the size of over 100 million population. There are
many that we can be proud of.
His talks encouraged us a lot. He insisted that
we take pride of ourselves and our local things
that have been established for long time.
No wonder there was repeated applauses after
his talk which means the audiences had the
same feeling and were very motivated people.

A panel discussion following the talk was
also good one. The panelists were the people
who have tried to explore to build up something
amongst many problems and between the ideal and
the reality in local community. The audiences were
moved with their determination and enthusiasm.

This was fourth or fifth time for me to attend
such gatherings and thought it the best one so far.
It was a pity that the number of the audiences was
least among the past ones.

Apart from this event, I went to Osteria Gatt,
an Italian Restaurant opened in Nagano city last
year. The dishes and the service were very nice
and I want to tell you proudly that we have such a
nice restaurant in Nagano! I will come back there
to enjoy food and drinks more.

As I happned to have my Chardonnay 2008, we tasted
it with the people at the restaurant. I was a bit
relieved that the wine became better than three
weeks agao. In any case, marvelous future generations!
I felt a bit ashamed by facing the achievement of these
younger people have done.

JAが須坂市に直売所を作るらしい。
漸くできるか、須坂にも。
賑わいができるといいね。

生産者を向くのか、消費者を
向くのか、はたまたJA自身を
向いた直売所になるのか。

ともかく、楽しい場所になればいいね。

It is said that a farmers' shop
in Suzaka is planned by JA. It's
been long waited for by many people.
I hope it will become a popular
busy spot here.

I wonder how it is planned, if
it is for the producers, or for the
consumers, or for JA itself?

In any case, I hope it will be
a fun place.

巨峰の剪定をしていると
上ばかりを見ているので
この晴天だと
ふとしたはずみに、鳥が
空高く飛んでゆく姿や
キラキラ光りながら飛行機が
飛んでゆくのが見える。

鳥は気づくと直ぐに飛び去って
しまっているが、飛行機は
しばらく後を追うことができる。
夕方の空に南西に向かったり
そちらから北に飛んでゆく
飛行機雲が3本同時に見えた。
あれは中部空港なのか
大阪なのか。

While pruning kyoho grapes on the
overhead trellis, I happen to find
birds and shining airplanes flying
away in the blue sky.

Birds fly away very quickly but I can
follow the planes for a longer time.
In the evening, towards and from the
southeast sky, I found three contrails
at the same time.

Are they heading for or coming from
Nagoya or Osaka?

須坂駅前にシルキーというビルが
ある。観光協会とか須坂市商業観光課等
が入っているビルで、長野電鉄で
須坂に来られた方はここで観光
案内など入手できます。

最近は街歩きのお客さんが
結構顔を出すらしい。
静かで落ち着いている風情が
良いという方もいるらしい。

派手なものは無いですけどね、
街歩きはいいですね。
須坂は街全体が巨大迷路
ですからね。

There is a building called Silky.
You can find the offices of
Tourism Associatio and the
City Hall's Commerce and Tourism
Section, etc. Tourists to Suzaka
getting out from Nagano Electric
Railyway can get tourist information
about the town here.

They say there are not a small number
of walking tourists visit there saying
that the quiet atmosphere of the town
is good to them.

There is no breathtaking fantastic sightseeing
points other than some historical heritages but
the town is like a huge maze which the walkers
can enjoy.

今朝はこの冬一番の
寒さだったらしい。
長野でマイナス9.7度。
どうりで台所の水道が凍って
しまった訳だ。こういう事は
最近では珍しいのだが、
壁の中の立ち上げ部分に
凍結防止がされていないので
一冬に2-3回はこういうことが
起こる。しょうがないから水道の
蛇口に熱湯をかけるなどして
漸く夕方開通。

長野でマイナス9.7度といっても、
長野のアメダスは標高418メートル地点
にあるから、300メートル半ばの須坂
ではもう少し暖かかったかもしれない。
だが、標高650メートルにある畑は
マイナス10度は下回っているだろう。
大事な葡萄の樹が心配だ。
凍結防止帯を巻いておいた
効果を祈るのみ。
明日も寒くなるらしい。

It was the coldest morning today.
The temperature was reported to go
down as low as -9.7degree C.
No wonder the water was frozen and no
running water in the kitchen. Recently
it has rarely happens but it occurs
a few times during the winter. The water
pipe inside the wall just from the ground
may be bare and has no cold protection.
I had no choice but to pour hot boiling water
at the forcet. I got water all the way in
the evening.

Even though it was -9.7degree C in Nagano,
I know that the recording machine is installed
at the altitude of 418meter which is higher than
Suzaka where we are at around 350meter. So we might
have the warmer morning than reported. However. I have
a vineyard at the altitude of 650 meter wher I guess
the temperature should have gone down below -10dgree C.
I am worrying about my vines and I hope they will be
all right the cold protection we wrapped last month.
Tommorow will be another colder morning according to
the forecast.

今年7月から9月にリリース
予定のシャルドネ2008。
いい感じです。

会員向けに一部プリムール（予約販売）
をしようかと思っています。でも、まだ会員制度
を造っていなかった。今月中に
始めようと思います。

This is Chardonnay 2008 which I plan to
release in July to September this year.
It is in good quality.

I wonder if I should make an advance
sale of Primeur to the members only.
But I have not organized the membership
yet. I will introduce membership system
later this month here.

須坂市グリーンツーリズム研究会
の新年会があった。昨年の
「収穫会イン東京」で出したような
料理でということで、お持ちいただいたり
した料理を楽しみつつ、今年の抱負などを語る。

料理は、
野菜とキノコの鍋の左から右へ
きんぴらごぼう、ひたし豆（酢を使って
食用油とにんじんなどと和えてある）、
干し大根とニシンの煮付け（干し大根は
一昨年に作ったものです）、
左へ行ってりんごの横から、
ポテトサラダ、油味噌と胡桃のシソ
包み、干しナスと野菜の油いため煮、
前列左から、茄子のからし漬け柿の葉で
覆って漬けたもの、聖後院かぶらで巻いた
柿とゆずのマリネ。
多くが市内で以前から農業体験の
学生等を受け入れている越さんの
料理です。
この後、塩野のキヌヒカリの
おにぎり。

飲物は私のシャルドネ2008（未リリース）
とメルロー/カベルネs2007。りんごジュース
と巨峰ジュース。

食べ過ぎて苦しいくらいでした。

There held a new year gathering of
Suzaka Green Toruism Study Group
today. The dishes were brought by
the members and were something like
those we had prepared at the
Harvest in Tokyo party last year.

The dishes are;
from left to right infront of hot pot
of vegetables and mushrooms, shreded
burdock pan fried and sweetened, soy beans
vinegared with oil and carrots, cooked dried
raddish with dried herring (raddish was dried
more than one year ago), from left next to the
apples, potate salad, sweetened miso paste with
nuts wrapped in prilla leaf, cooked dried egg plant
with other veges, in the front row from the left,
egg plant pickled with mustard and covered with
persimon leaf, persimon and yuzu lemon wrapped with
white round raddish. Many of them are made by Ms. Koshi
who has been accepting students at home for farm stay.
Then we have rice balls made by Kinuhikari rice from Shiono
area.

Drinks are my Chardonnay 2008 (not released yet)
and Merlot/Cabernets 2007, apple juice and
Kyoho juice.

Everything was so delicious and I ate too much!

大雪警報が出ていて
飯山や信濃町といった県境の
方はたいそうな雪が降ったらしい。
が、須坂はご覧の通り。今朝は軽い雪
が2－3センチほど、といったところ。

今夜長野市内に用事があり、
午後10時頃は雪が結構な
勢いで降っていたが、須坂に
戻ると星が見えていて
道も乾いている。
須坂だってかなり北に
あるのだが、昔から
左様に雪は多くはないのだ。

As the heavy snow warning
was announced, it snowed much
in Iiyam or Shianomachi area which
are boarder twons to Niigata Pref.
But we did not have so much
snow here in Suzaka. It was about
2 to 3 cm depth of new snowfall
this morning. The snow was very
light though.

I was in Nagano city at around
10pm tonight and it snowed much
as shown in the picture. However,
once I got back to Suzaka, the stars
were seen in the sky and the road was
dry. Suzaka is situated in the north
part of Nagano Pref., but we have not had
so much snow here since long time ago.

大雪だの強風だのと
注意報は出てていたが、
やはり須坂辺りは平穏な
ものだった。

それでも寒波のせいか、午後
陽がさしても温度が上がらず、
積もった雪は硬く畑にでている
と足が直ぐに冷たく感ずる。
こんな日は素手で作業は無理だ。

明日も終日大雪注意報が
でているが、さてどうなるか。

We had warnings of heavy snowfall
and strogn wind for today but it was another
quiet winter day in Suzaka.

But it was cold whole day due to
cold wave from the continent, the
temperature did not go up even with
the sunshine and the snow on the ground
was fronzen. The feet got cold soon
out in the vineyards and I could not
stand working with bare hand.

We have again the warning of heavy
snowfall tomorrow but I wonder how
it would turn to be.

雪が、夕刻積もりかけたかと
思ったが、今は道が濡れている
程度で、天気予報の大雪は
今夜遅くからになるのだろうか。

昨日はいい天気で、夕方になっても
青空が続いていて、飛行機が
南西から東北に向けて空高く飛んだのが見えた。
航跡がくっきりと映えて、大分時間を
おいてから、置き去りにされたような
うなるような低い音が
それを追いかけて行った。
剪定を終えようとしていた
一瞬間。

It started snowing after one
o'clock this afternnon. It was not
enough to stay on the ground but now
it gets the roads wet. A heavy snow fall
forecasted for tonight will start late
in this evening.

It was clear yesterday and the sky remained
blue after sunset for a while. I found a
vapor trail of the aircraft crossing the blue
sky from southwest to northeast. It was seen
so clear and I heard low vibrating sound to follow
after long time the aircraft had flown away
as if it had been left behind.
I saw it at a time when I was about to finish
pruning.

そういえば年が明けて
神社仏閣どこにもお参りして
いなかった。やや遅ればせながら
今日善光寺さんに行ってきた。
3連休だったせいか、参道から
人が多く内裏へ参拝する
人たちが長蛇の列を作っていた。

今朝は案外と冷え込んだようで、
10時半を過ぎていたのに境内の
日陰には氷が張っている。大勧進
横の池もこの通り。

I remembered not to have visited any
shrine or temples for the new year yet.
So I visited Zenkoji temple to worship.
As it was the last day of the three day
holidays in a row, there were many more people
than I expected with a long que for
the special worship course inside the temple.

Because of the low temperature this morning,
I found ices in the shadow parts of the premises.
The small pond next to Daikanjin was covered
with ice even at 10:30 am.

今朝は思いもかけぬ雪。
冷たい雪だと道に積もっても
溶けるのに時間がかかる。
チラチラと止みそうな雪が
舞っている。
寒くて冬らしい朝。

午後ワイン葡萄の剪定を始める。
まずヴィオニエから。
昨日し掛かりの巨峰の剪定は
また別の日に。雪が積もってしまうと
頭の上にある枝を切るのに
いちいち雪が落ちてくるので
やりにくいのだ。
その点垣根は雪が積もる
様な事は少ないから
今日の様な天気でもできる。

している人たちがちらほら。
勤勉なベテラン達に
頭が下がる。

We had unexpected snow fall this
morning. It does not melt so quickly
in the streets if they were cold enough.
Snow flakes keep falling but they seem
to stop soon. It was cold and it seemed
a real winter morning.

I started pruning wine grapes today
starting with viognier. I had to put
off pruning kyoho vines which I had
started yesterday. Once it snowed, the
snow on the branch on the overhead
trellis falls on the face and made it
difficult to continue the operation.
Therefore I have to wait for while for
the kyoho vines but I can do for wine
vines as they are trained on the lower
cordon wires.

In the late afternnon when I came back home,
I found a few veteran farmers pruning in the
cold vineyards.They really work hard.
My hats off to them.

今日初剪定。昨年は4日だったから
5日も遅い。2日には早々と畑に出たのだが
その後、色々と忙しくしていたせいだ。
剪定しなければならないワイン葡萄も
大分増えてきているので、内心
ひやひやものだ。そのうえ、
もしかしたら畑を少し増やすかも
知れないし。

連日の好天で、午後3時くらいまでは
素手でも問題ないくらいぽかぽかだ。
太陽が山に沈むととたんに寒くなる。
それでも午後5時少し前くらいまでは
できるので、助かる。

First pruning today. It was on the
4th last year so my start delayed
five days. I went out to the vineyards
on the 2nd but I have been busy since then.

Five days delay made me nervous because
I have more area to prune this year as the
vines have grown and I may rent more area
this year again.

Thanks to the fine weather these days,
I can prune without gloves until around
3pm. But soon after the sun set into the
mountain, the temperature gose down quickly
and it gets cold. Now I can work outside
until around 5pm if the weather was fine
which is very helphul to me.

本来葡萄栽培を語るときに
真っ先に話すべき事は、実は気候
なのだけれど、昨日は須坂のことを
書いていて土壌のことを先に
語ってしまった。

葡萄栽培で一番重要なのは気候で、
これを語り始めると、とても長くなるので
少しずつ紹介していこうと思う。

よく積算温度というのが使われる。葡萄が生育
できるかどうかを語るには意味があるが、
良い葡萄ができるかどうかについては、
新世界ではBiologically Effective Day Dgrees
という指標を使う。生物学的に有効な積算温度
と私は訳している。植生有効積算温度でも
いいかな。新しい葡萄畑を見つけるために
最初に使われる指標となっている。

実はこのBEDDについては、私が計算したところ
日本ではどの産地でもそれほど大きな差がなくて、
また、ほとんどのワイン葡萄品種が栽培可能だという
値に落ち着いている。

という事は、日本ではBEDD以外の地域差が
葡萄の良し悪しを決めているということになる。
それは、土壌であり、日較差であり、日照時間であり
降水量,微小気候などなどとなっているように
思うのだ。

さて、BEDDについて。
これは一日の平均気温（(最高温度プラス最低温度)÷2)
が10度以下と19度以上はカットするというもの
なのだ。10度を越えないと計算が始まらないし、１９度を
越えても19度で計算するというもの。
計算の対象は通年ではなくて、栽培期間なので
北半球では4月から10月までとなる。
例えばある日の最低気温が５度、最高気温が14度だと、19度÷2
となり9.5度となるので、その日は積算されないことになる。
ある日の最低気温が15度、最高気温が30度だとすると
45度÷2で22.5度となるが、その日は19度としてしか
カウントされない。

I wrote about the soil of Suzaka yesterday
but,I should have written about the weather when
I talked about grape growing.

The most important factor for grape growing
is the weather. Once one has started to talk
about the weather, it wouls take long long time
so I will introduce a bit of my knowledge
from time to time.

One often uses day degrees for the grape
growing suitability. It may be useful for
such occasion but not enogh if one talks
about good grape growing. In the new world
of wines, one often uses Biologically Effective
Day Degrees or BEDD.　BEDD is first of all
calculated by the investors to find out new
potential vineyards.

I calculated BEDD for many grape growing regions
and found out that there was no big difference
among the Japanese regions. As I did not statisticall
analyzed the result, I can only say no big difference
which is not convincing to many people. For the BEDD
figures, I also found that most of the wine grapes
would be grown in Japan.

It means that the quality of grapes in Japan
is determined by other factors than BEDD which
is either soil, diural difference, sunshine hours,
rainfall,　micro climate, etc.

What is BEDD ?
We use mean temperature ((maximun temperature + minimun
temperature)÷2)　and cut the figure below 10 degrees C
and above 19 degrees C. The temperature is calculated
only for the period of growing season. In north hemispher,
it begins in April and ends in October.
If mean temperature for a day is below 10, such day is
not calculated. If mean temperature is above 19, such day is
counted with the temperature of 19 degrees C.

Suzaka city, the mercy of nature to wines - soil

須坂市は、信州の北部にあって
その一部を群馬県に接し、
県境を成す山々を背に、やがて
信濃川に名前を変える千曲川に下る
いくつかの中小河川の扇状地や河岸段丘の
上にある。山すそが切れたあたりから
千曲川に向かって全体が西向きのやや平坦な
斜面となる。その河岸から根子岳、
四阿山（あずまやさん）あるいは
南志賀方面に目をやると、標高
300メートル前半から1500メートル以上へ
と標高差のある地形をなし、道は山懐に入ると
急峻な坂道となる。

そのような深い山々を起源として
何十万年或いはそれ以上の年月をかけて
形成された扇状地にはかつての山土や
森林土が堆積し、水はけが大変
良いだけではなく滋味豊かな土壌を
形成しているようだ。この地で造られた
ワインにミネラルや複雑で奥深い
風味を感じるのは、まさにその
土壌の成せる技といえるだろう。

ほかのどことも違うワイン。
それはこの地で造られる葡萄だけが
受けた恩恵によるものではないか。

Suzaka city is stuated in the nothern part
of Shinshu adjacent to Gunma prefecture at
certain part of it and holding the country
deviding mountains as its back. It is on the
fan shape slopes or steps formed by the rivers
flowing into Chikuma River which changes
its name to Shinano River. The slopes become
flatter at the edges of mountains and face
the west. Looking up towards the famous
Nekodake Mountain or Azumaya Mountain from the
river, one can realize the land on a sharp uphill
from the altitude of a little over 300 meters
to 1500 meters and above.

The fan slopes have been formed with the source
of land from the high mountains over hundereds of
thousand years or more with the very fertile soil
originally from the ground of mountains and wood lands.
Therefore the fan is not only permeable but also
very rich. That is why the wines made here are rich in
minerals and have high complexity.

One of the reasons of the uniqueness of the wines
here is the grapes grown here with such mercy.

今回の事業計画については、
ありがたいことに、
様々な立場の方々（企業経営者であったり、
投資事業を行っていたりその
アドバイスを行っている方々であったり、
創業支援を行っている方々等）
から経験に基づいたご意見や
アドバイスを頂いている。
ありがたいことだと感謝している。

どなたもご指摘されるのが
資金調達手段と販売で、特に
販売先の確保が最重要点
としてあげられている。
（ここでは、いいワインを造るという
事は自明の前提条件なので、
あえてその部分には触れていない。）
立派な計画があっても販売実績が
伴わないと直ぐに事業が立ち行かなくなる。
事業計画はまわるようにできていても
それを担保することが始まる時に
できていることが必要なのだ。

今日もそのうちのお一人から先日に
ひき続き親身なアドバイスをメールで頂いた。

いろいろな問題にぶち当たるが
そういう物をクリアしてゆかないと
事業なんて始められないし継続できない。
そもそも目指しているいいワイン造りも
できなくなる。いいワインを造るため
頑張ってゆきましょうー！

I happen to be in a positin to
receive precious comments and
advices from the people in various
positions, some are business owners,
others are investors and their advisors
and some are the supporters of incuvation
business. I am very lucky and very happy
to have so many kind and serious people
around.

The common comments I have received so far
are how to prepare funds and how to secure
the sales. Of course, making good wines
is the fundamental of the business that is
self-evident. So I dare not to mention about
it here. Even with the good looking business
plan, once the sale does not go well, the business
will face serious situation. The important
thing is to secure the sales even at the
start of the business.

I received additonal advice in detail by e-mail
from one of them which I felt very grateful.

I may face many problems but I have to clear
them one by one so that I can start and continue
what I want to do and the business. In order to
make good wines to make people happy, I am
determined to do my best!

恒例？のプロによる獅子舞を見る。
う～んやはり動きが洗練されている。
他の出し物は見そびれてしまった。
獅子に頭をかんでもらったので
今年は良いことがあるだろう。

獅子というのは太陽の化身という
説があるらしい。それで、太陽の
余り出ない冬場に病気などが
流行らないよう、太陽の
代わりに門付けをしてまわるの
だという。

その後餅つきに飛び入りして
できたての餅をぜんざいに入れたり、
大根おろしをまぶして頂く。

その後は中小企業振興センターで
ワイナリー関連の打ち合わせ。
う～ん、やはり販売がキー
だな～。

I drove to Minenohara Kogen
to deliver apple juice etc.,
and joined the people to watch
Japanese Lion Dance that is
supposed to be perfomed at
the occasions to celebrate
something or somebody.

The professional performance is very
sophisticated. As I was biten by
the head by the lion, I would spend
this year in happiness.

The performer explained that the lion
of the lion dance was considered the
disguiced sun and the dance
was performed in front of houses to
blow away winter illness when the
real sun was timid.

I then joined mochi(rice cake) making session
and enjoyed them in sweet bean soup and with
grated radish.

Afte these event, I went to see the
consultants of the Small Business Support
Center in Nagano about winery establishment
and spend the rest of the
day discussing the matter. The key is the
sale of the wines that is same as the
potential shareholders indicated the other day.

今朝も目を覚ますと
思いのほかの大雪。
比較的湿った雪で
成人式などで、着物の人は
足元が大変でしたね。

親戚の家に呼ばれて新年会で
お世話になりましたが、
此方は腰が重くて、何も
お手伝いできずに申し訳ないな～。
それにしても、女性陣はすごいね～。
料理を作って、出して、片付けて、
…。それに家事全般。正月や
お盆は親戚の分までやっちゃうの
だから。しかも仕事を抱えて。

此方は重くなったおなかを
抱えてゴロゴロしていただけで…。
そう思うんだったら何かしろよって、
心の中で叱責の声が。そうだよね。

We had again relatively heavy snowfall
this morning. It was wet snow and it may
have bothered those who attended the
coming-of-age ceremony.

I spent two days at the relative's
home for a new year gathering.
I felt sorry because I did not do any
help for the party. The women are
great. They prepared the marvelous
party foods, served them and cleaned
them up and other house keepings.
Everyday they do the similar
things and do much more for the occasions
of new year and obon in summer.
What is more, they go to work, too!

Comparing with those industrious women,
I spent hours holding stuffed stomach.
I can here a criticism of inner voice that
I should do any help if I felt so.
I agree with it. No doubt about it!

雪が上がって青空と太陽が
顔を出したので、あれをやっておくか
と畑へ出る。3が日くらいはとも
思うが、別段用事があるわけでは
ないので、畑に出たって
いいでしょう。

パープルや昨年植えた生食用の
葡萄の幼木などに防寒帯を巻く。
この冬はマイナス6度くらいまでは
下がったが、一番寒いのは2月で、
マイナス10度を切ってくる時に
備えてのものだ。

気のせいか最近藁を巻いてある畑が
増えたような気がする。
きっとパープルなどへ切り替えている
畑が多いからなのだろうな。

太陽が出ている間は手も冷たく
ならずに気持ちよく仕事ができる。

Once it stopped snowing, I decided
to go out to the vineyard to do
something. I do not have to do it
during these new year holidays. But
why not? I don't have anything to
do at home either.

I wanted to cover the Nagano Pruple,
new table grapes, etc., with the
cold protection. So far we have had
6 degrees below zero this winter but
the coldest time is February when it
sometimes gets to under 10 below zero.
The protection may work for such a time.

I notice that there are many more vineyards with
cold protection this winter than ever. It may be
because the kyoho vines are pulled and new varieties
are planted.

While it shines, my fingers do not become
cold and the operation went smoothly.

新年明けましておめでとうございます。
今年もよろしくお願い致します。

長野は雪で明けました。昨日来チラチラ
と降り続いていた雪が今日も一日中続いて
正月らしい雰囲気です。
クリスマス前後の暖かさで街からは消えていた
雪ですが、これでスキー場関係者も一安心でしょう。

今年がどんな年になるのか、何やらどきどき。
楽しみなこともありますが、まずは着実に
良い葡萄を作って良いワインを。そして、楽しい
時間を多くの人たちと過ごしたいと思います。

Happy New Year !

We opened the first day of the year with snow falls.
In our region, we feel it more natural if we had snow at
this time of the year. Most of the people in ski business
must have felt relieved with this snow for the holiday
season especially after the warm Christmas holidays.

I am very excited with the new year wondering what would
happen with a few things that I am expecting and other
things I cannot imagine yet. In any case, I put priority to
grow better grapes for better wines.

I hope I will be able to share good times with many people.
