今日は早朝薬散を終えてから
ポツポツと雨が当ったが、
後は終日乾いていた。
ようやく7月最後の薬散が
終わった。

シャルドネの房も大分
落ち着いて見える。
毎日雨が降っているときは
今にも病気が蔓延しそうに
見えたのだが。

梅雨明け後日照時間が例年の6割ほどしかない。
これからは真夏の太陽に戻ってきて
欲しいものだ。

Rain drops came down after I had finished
spraying early morning but it was too little
to call it rain. Then we did not have rain
whole day today. That was the last spary
in July.

Today in the chardonnay vineyard,
the bunches looked all right so far.
Looking at them under the rain, I felt
as if any disease would spread at once.

For the period of July, we had only about
60% of sunshine of average year. I really
wish the summer sun shine will come back
as soon as possible.

またまた知る人ぞ知る果物、
ワッサー。なんと須坂で生まれた
桃とネクタリンのハイブリッド。
開発者というか、発見者というか
ともかく須坂の中村さんの
畑が発祥の地。中村さんの
小さい頃のあだ名をとって
「ワッサー」と名づけられました。
（須坂には中村姓のお宅はたんと
あります。）

友人宅で頂いた桃とワッサー。
頂いたのはもっと沢山なんですが…。
黄色い果肉はしっかりしていて、
きれいに食べられます。すっきりした
甘さです。酸味は強くないです。
そういえば桃も季節でしたね。

桃についての疑問。
巨峰などは袋をかけて
傘までかけても烏につつかれる
のに、桃は何もしないでも
何もされない。　
なんでかな～？

Who knows this fruit, 'Wassar'?
It was born in Suzaka,
a hybrid of Nectarine and Peach
found in the orchard of Mr. Nakamura.
Wassar is taken from his young time
nickname and now it is a registered trademark.
For your info, there are many many
Nakamura families in Suzaka.

I happened to get many of them
from my friend. It reminds me that it
is the time for summer fruits here.
The yellow flesh is firm and less
dripping juice. It is not too sweet and
low acid.
Peach is in the season,too.

I have one long time question about
peach. I grow grapes and they are pecked
by crows even it is wrapped and with
unbrella but peach is quite safe withou
protection. Why is that ?

今日も話題の中心は
天気であった。
が、移り気な天気のおかげで
雨の天気予報どおりとは行かない
ラッキーな一日でした。

友人からの頂き物。
これもだ～れも知らない、
というか知る人ぞ知る須坂の
農産物。プラム。
色々と種類があって、生産者
でないので名前などいちいち覚えては
いませんが。疲れた時など、この甘酸っぱさ
が心地良いんです。

酸味が強いもの、そうでないもの、
歯ざわりがしっかりしたもの、
ソフトなもの、色々あるんですね。

今収穫と出荷が最盛期です。

The main topic of the day was
again weather today. But thanks to
the capricious weather rain forecast
failed and we enjoy the lucky
and drier day.

They are the plums given by my friend
grower. Almost nobody knows but
the so-called 'Fruit Kigndom' Suzaka
does have such fruit here.
There are many kinds and I don't remember
each name of the fruit. But when you are
tired, such sweet and sour fruit is really
refreshing.

Sour or sweet, firm or soft, there are
many varieties. It is the hightime of
the harvest and shipping. The growers
are busy to pick and pack them under
the rainy sky.

昨晩寝る直前にチェックした
天気予報では午後3時までは
持ちそうだった。朝薬散ができそう。
が、今朝4時過ぎに目を覚ますと
(大概薬散は早朝なんです）
なにやら湿った音。しばらくすると
地面に落ちる激しい音の雨。
天気予報も雨に変わっていた。

7時過ぎに一旦止んだが8時頃から
また降り始めて、結局2時頃まで
降っていた。午前中雨の中で
トリミングをしたが合羽を
着ていてもしっかり濡れました。

止んだあと陽がさして
気温も上昇。これなら薬散できるかも、
でも天気予報は6時頃から雨。
トリミングを暗くなるまで
やったが結局雨は降らず。

やれやれ、天気は
人為ではどうしようも
無いから仕方ないな。

Last night I checked weather forecast for
today before going to bed. It showed that
it would not rain until 3pm then I would be
able to spray in the vineyard.

I woke up at around 4 this morning to
spray but I heard somehow wet sound
outside. It just started drizzling and
after a while it turned to the shower.
Weather forecast showed the rain all this
morning.

It stopped raining at around 7 but
it started raining again one hour
later. Then it continued until around
2pm. I did trimming of the vines
this morning but got wet to the skin
even with rain wear.

After the rain stopped in the afternoon
sun showed up to shine and the temperature
went up. I wonder if I would be able to
spray but the weather forecast showed
the rain in the evening. I had to give up
the spray today. Then I continued the
trimming up until it got dark but finally
no rainfall in the evening. I wonder if
I should have sprayed or not.

Who knows it would not rain this
afternoon ? There is nothing man
can do about such weather. It's beyond
our control. That is a taste of life.

毎日午後3時辺りに傘マークが
出ていて、何時防除の農薬散布を
するか悩ましいところだ。
といっても、そろそろベトも出ているし
できる限り早く散布をしたいところ。

畑ではその前にやる事がある。
朝草刈をしてから、明日散布予定
の畑の摘芯。枝が重なったり
絡まったりしていると薬が
掛からないのだ。また風通しも
よくないし陽もよく当らない。

ふと空を見上げると遠く青空に
夏の積乱雲らしきものが見える。
とはいえ、周囲には雨雲も
広がっている。夏空と梅雨空
がせめぎあいをしているのだ。
お昼前後の
暑さは真夏のものだが、
やけに蒸し暑い。夏の太陽が
待ち望まれる。

Everyday we find umbrella mark
in the weather forecast at around
3pm. Such forecast has made it
difficult when to spray on the
vines. As downy mildew is spotted
on the leaves, we are worrying to
spray as soon as possible.

However, as well as mowing,
I have to finish topping
first of all to thin shoots
so that they do not overrap each
other making shade and making it
difficult for the light and wind
penetration.

I happened to look up the sky
and saw the blue sky with
cumulonimbus in the far distance.
However the rainy clouds were
near sorrounding us. Summer sky and
the rainy season's one are opposing
each other. It was hot like summer
at noon time but it was too humid.
Now many people are looking forward
to the summer sunshine.

昨夜はかなり雨が降ったが、
朝には上がっていて、友人の
力も借りて、新しく植えたメルローの
畑の草刈をした。ほんの2、3日前には
草の海だったのだが、40センチほどに
伸びた草を刈り終えると、このように
いい感じになる。ただし、シンクイ虫に
やられた苗木も2本発見。やれやれ。

畑にはムラサキツユクサがあちこちに
咲いている。可憐な花だが、雑草なので
刈ってしまうが、よ～くみるとなにやら
エイリアンの顔の様な形にも
見える。

午後も草刈をしていたが、
西の方から雨雲が広がり
ポツポツ来たかと思ったら
雨脚が強くなった。
やむなく中断。暗くなりかけた
頃に止んだ。これから一週間
傘マークがついている。
梅雨明け以降日照時間が
極端に少なく気をもんでいる。

It rained pretty hard last night but
it cleared up this morning. I got my
frined's help to mow the weed in the
new Merlot vineyar. Only a few days
ago, it looked like a weed sea with
the weed of 40cm high. After the mowing,
the vineyard looked quite cool like this.
But I found two young vines damaged
by the borer catapillars. Good grief!

There are many spider lilies in the
vineyard. They are pretty flowers but
are considered weed and mowed anyhow.
The figure looks like the face of
ailean at close look.

I was mowing in the afternoon but the
rain clouds came from the west and
it started raining hard so I had to
give up the work. It stopped raining
when it got dark. We have rain forecasted
for another week. After the declaration
of the end of the rainy season, we have
very limited sun shine hours which make
fruit growers worry about the poor harvest
this year.

ごく僅かです。

Good news for wine educators.
I have decided to spare some wine
grapes for education purpose.

White varieties: chardonnay,
vinognier, semillon, sauvignon blanc,
and riesling. Timing: September.

Red varieties: merlot, cabernet sauvignon,
cabernet franc and pinot noir. (shiraz is
not available due to poor fruitfulness)
Timing: October.

Price is 500 yen per bunch for each
variety excluding tax and transportation.

The basic of winetasting is to know the
varaetal character of each cultivar but
few people can actually see and taste the
berries. So it willbe a very precious
experience.

Each bunch will be picked from Kusunoki
Vineyards. As these grapes are to be made
into wines, only very limited number of
bunches will be made available for
such purpose.

Only 5 set of each white and red varieties
will be sold on booking. Please contact
Kusunoki Vineyards for booking.

今まで全く宣伝してなかったの
ですが、実は玉ねぎドレッシング
も売ってたんです。ワインとは
関係ないし、販売をやめようと
思っているうちに、また欲しいという
お客さんが少しずつ増えてやめられなく
なってしまいました。
自家栽培の玉葱を使ってます。

そのまま野菜にもいいですが、
奴、餃子、焼肉にも使えます。

玉葱はオリゴ糖が豊富な食材で、
オリゴ糖は腸内でビフィズス菌
の増殖に貢献し、結果的に悪玉菌である
ウェルシュ菌の増殖を
抑えます。別にドレッシングとして
摂らなくても普通に食べれば
良いんですが。和風テイストで、
ドロ～リ系が苦手な
子供にも人気。黒酢も使っていて
なかなかヘルシーです。

1本400ミリリットルで630円。

To tell the truth, I have onion
dressing for sale. I have not made
any advertisement but sold through
a few shops in town only. It has nothing
to do with wine so I once decided not
to sell it any more. But I have customers
to this goods and I cannot stop selling.
Home grown onion is used for this dressin.

It is good for salad as well as Tohu,
Gyoza (dampling), fried pork, etc.

Onion is rich with oligossacharide
which helps to grow bifidus bacteria
in human body and restrains Welch bacteria,
a bad bacteria.

It is not necessary to take onion
as dressing. You can eat onions as usual.
It is soy sauce based Japanese taste dressing
which kids like to eat vegetables with.
It may be helthy as black vinegar is used,too.

Volume 400ml and 630yen per bottle.

日食見ましたか？
須坂は朝は雨だったのですが
ちょうど日食の時間だけ
日がさして、日食グラスで
存分に太陽を観察できました。

ハイランド星を観る会の
Shinobee さんのおかげです。
ありがとうございました。
ちょっと前に日食グラスについて
尋ねたのですが、気前良くいくつも
お手元の日食グラスを下さいました。

観測者を増やそうと、私も手許に
一つだけ残して全て差し上げました。
引っ張りだこだったようで
手にした方々はきっと有効に
使ってくれたものと思います。

私もその1個で、葡萄畑のお手伝いの
方々と大変楽しめました。
各々、サングラスやら下敷き様のものやら
手鏡（？）やらを持ってきていましたが、
日食グラスに一同歓声。
太陽を見てまた歓声。
たっぷり楽しめました。
この時間みんなの携帯がなって
いましたね～。「観た？観た？」と。

Did you see the exlips today?
It was rainy this morning in Suzaka
but it shined just when the exlips was
observed. I enjoyed seeing it through
the exlips glasses.

It was thanks to Ms.Shinobee of
Hiland Stars Watching Club in Suzaka.
I asked her about the instruments to watch
the exlips when she kindly gave me many
exlips glasses and warning notes as well
as developed negative films.

I left one pair of glasses on hand and
gave away others to many people. I believe
that these glasses were fully used by many
people.

I enjoyed the observation with the one left
with me in the vineyard with the people helping
me the operation in the vineyard. They brought
something to the vineyard like, many sunglasses,
coloured plastic board, and hand mirror (?!), etc.,
but as soon as they found my glasses, they were so
happy. All of us enjoyed the miracle in the sky
very much.　Everybody's mobile phone
was ringing while we watched the sun asking
'Did you see it ? ' or 'It's started!', etc.

I thank you again Ms. Shinobee for the exlips
glasse.

今日も朝から降ったり止んだり
ほぼ終日雨の天気だった。
午前中雨の中の作業を終え
午後は園地点検。

農協のぶどう部会員が
グループで各人の畑を
廻り、着果量を調べる。
不適正（房のつけすぎや
大房）だと不合格となり
再検査となる。例年
不合格となる園地が数例
出る。

私は一応合格で、袋掛けを
始められるのだが、1週間前に
摘粒した房ががちがちになっている。
雨が多いので玉伸び（粒肥大）が
好すぎるのだ、既に例年の（この
時期の）110％に達しているらしい。
このままだと裂果の恐れが
あるので、摘粒の見直しを
やる必要がある。

It rained, stopped, and rained again
whole day today. After work in the
morning, we had Vineyard Inspection
this afternoon.

The members of Grapegrowers registered
with JA formed a few groups to visit
each other's vineyards and checked the
bunch size and expected harvest. If too many
bunches were left for harvest and if too big
bunches were left, you would got 'not passed'
and had to thin the berry number and bunch
number for second inspection. Every year there
are a few vineyards with 'not passed' in our
local grapegrowers area.

I got all 'passed' so far and now am
able to start wrapping. However, the berry
grew so big in one week and the bunches
have become too tight already. So I have to
check bunches again before wrapping.
According to the official observation of
standard vines, the berry size has reached
110% of that of the average year of this
time. The inner berries of the bunches may
break if they get too big.

梅雨の晴れ間みたいな、
久しぶりの好天に朝から
りんごの薬散にスピード
スプレイヤーが走りまわって
いた。そろそろ葡萄の番でも
ある。

今日とび玉発見。たった一房。
何があってもこの時季になると
出てくるものだな。そろそろ袋
掛けが本格的になるこの頃。
これがいくつも出るように
なると色変わりを見つけた鳥達が
味見にとつつきに来る。まだ
甘くなるには時間がかかるの
だが。

そろそろ蜘蛛も大きくなってきた。
殺虫剤を撒いてないので、
今年の巨峰畑は蜘蛛の巣だらけだ。
その割には良く蚊にさされる。
蚊はどうやって蜘蛛の巣を避けて
いるのだろうか？

It was a very fine day
after the rainy days in
a row. Starting early in
the morning, everybody rushed to
ride on the sprayers to spray
on apples which was due a few days ago.
Grape spray is coming soon,too.

I found a colored beryy today! Only one
bunch in all the Kyoho vineyards.
Despite of the funny weather, such
physiological change certainly occurs
and tells us the timing of the veraison
when wrapping operation is to start.
With this color change, the birds start
pecking on such berries even though
the they do not taste sweet yet.

The spiders are growing bigger recently.
As I have not used pesticides at all
this year in the vineyards, I find
many spiders but I still get many
mosquito bites. I wonder how they
can avoid the spider webs?

葡萄の里須坂をPRしようと思ったんだけど…。
というのも全国的には「須坂市」は
誰も知らないに等しいしね。
5月の「Wine Tokyo 2009」でも
「須坂ってどこにあるの?」というのが
ほとんどの人の第一声。

そこで、1700年代の第7代須坂藩主
堀直堅の描いた「皿に葉つきぶどう」
（須坂市立博物館蔵）という
掛軸の絵を使って、「実は須坂では
250年前から葡萄を食べていたんです。
藩主の描いた絵があるんです」と。
（この掛け軸が描かれたのが江戸か
須坂か判然とはしないが）という
歴史を語れるではないか。

と思って市役所に問い合わせているが
「個人の利益のためには使えません」
というつれない返事。著作権の
問題なのかな？　直販する巨峰や
パープルの箱の中にそういう
説明文を入れればインパクトあると
思うんだけどね。「さすが須坂の葡萄は
歴史があるね、なにより文化度が高い
（高かった）ね。」と。
文化財というのはそういう使い方は
できないことになっているのかな。

土産物の包装紙に使ったって
いいんじゃないのかな。須坂の宣伝にこそなれ
何か不都合でもあるのだろうか。

I was about to advertize the Grape Land
Suzaka but ... Because Suzaka is almost
no name Japan wide. First question I was
asked at the 'Wine Tokyo 2009' was 'Where
is Suzaka?'

Therefore I thought to tell people that
grape has been eaten in Suzaka since
long time ago and the 7th lacal Daimyo
Naokata Hori drew the grape in 1700s.
The Kakejiku drawing is kept at Suzaka
Museum. I am not sure if this drwaing
was made in Edo or in Suzaka but anyhow
we can tell the history between grape
and Suzaka.

Then I asked at the City Hall but I was told
that such thing would not be used for personal
profit ! Is there any trademark issues ?
If my customers found such note in the gift
box of grape,they would be impressed about
the history and the cultural level in old
Suzaka. I wonder if cultural assets cannot
be used for such purpose?

I think it should be OK even if we can use
the drawing as the gift wrapping paper. It
can be an good advertisement but not
incovenience to nobody.

先日の梅雨明け宣言から数日。
梅雨が戻ったように
雨が降っています。
昨日も朝方まで雨、午後も
3時頃から雨。
そして今日も一日中雨。
降ったり止んだり、時折
強く降ったりを繰り返して
います。

畑の中は雨にも関わらず
相変わらず人が大勢出て摘粒の
作業が続いています。

私の畑はようやく摘粒が
一通り終わり、隣の
りんご畑に面した部分は
袋をかけが終わりました。
そのせいで、これだけ降っても
少し余裕があるのは
ありがたいこと。

でもまだまだ作業は続きます。

Only a few days later of the
declaration of the end of the
rainy season, we have rain again
for three days in a row. The
rainy season seems to have come
back. It rained until yesterday
morning and in the afternoon it
started raining at around 3 pm.
And we have rain whole day today.
It rained and stopped and rained
sometimes heavily and sometimes
drizzling.

Despite of such rain, there are
many people in the kyoho vineyards
eleswhere. They are doing berry thinning
which they have to finish within this week
end.

Thanks to the helpers, I have finished
berry thinning and wrapped the bunches
along the boarder of the neighbouring
apple orchard which is due to have spray
tomorrow. As such, I feel a bit secured
today with such a rain.

(The berry thinning is
almost over and some of the bunches are wrapped
in the rain. )

There are many opertaions waiting for though.

(Three ladies helped me to lay strow mulch
in the Merlot vineyard next to the kyoho
vineyard where they were doing berry thinning.
It shined for a while in the afternoon. The
perfect anti UV wearing.)

去年収穫ゼロだったメルロー
の畑に藁でマルチを始めた。
予定では梅雨明け直前だったの
が突然の梅雨明けで遅れてしまった。

水分の蒸散防止が第一目的。
有機物の補給（C/N比に注意しないとね）
を兼ねて。余り厚く敷くとなかなか分解
されずに鼠を呼ぶことになってしまう
ので、薄く敷いている。

先週の土曜日から雨が降ってないので
今週末は灌水をやらねばと思っていたら
今晩から明日にかけて雨の予報。
頼むからまとまった雨が降って欲しい。

I started straw mulching today in
the Merlot vineyard where I had had
no harvest last year. I was supposed to
do so before the end of rainy season.
But because of the early ending, I was a bit
late to spread straws.

The main purpose of this mulching is to
reduce the evaporation of moisture from
the ground. The vines need water at its
root zones. Organic matters supply can be
achieved, too (be careful of C/N ratio).
Too thick mulching would call mouse in
winter so I spread straws very thin.

As I have no rain since last Saturday,
I thought I would have sprinkle water
this weekend. But the weather forecast
tells us that we may have rain tonight
through tomorrow morning. I hope to have
rain to some extent tonight.

昨日唐突に梅雨が明けた。
月曜日から午後雨の予報が
出ていたが、毎日降りそうで
降らない天気であった。

で、今日は長野で35度を
超えた。突然真夏の日差しが
さす。暑さ慣れしていなかった
巨峰にかなり日焼けがでた。

日焼けした粒は色つきが悪く
見た目も悪いので
いづれ落とさなければならない。
房形のポイントである
肩の部分に日焼けは多く、
房の形が悪くなるので
商品価値が下がるのだ。
困ったものだ。

昨日袋掛けをしたパープルは
大丈夫だろうか。今朝笠を
かけておいたのだが…。

The rainy season was over here
yesterday all of a sudden. The
weather forecast had said it would
rain everyday since Monday but it did
not happen.

Once the rainy season was declared
over, the temperature shot up to 35C degrees
today. The mid summer heat came
with strong sunshine which caused sun tan
on the Kyoho grape bunches. The bunces have
not been accustomed to the summer heat yet
this year. The sun tanned berry would got
good color and would not appeale
to the consumers at all. Therefore I have to
remove these berries now or later.
It was indeed an accident.

I wrapped the Nagano Purple grape bunches
yesterday afternoon and put parasol this
morning. I hope they will be all right.

7月14日のこと。
1789年パリ市民がバスティーユ
監獄を襲った日。またの名を
革命記念日（フランスの）。

日本のシャンソン界では
「パリ祭」としてイベントを
やっているのでフランスの
お祭りと思っている人が
多そう？確かにフランス最大の
祝祭日とはいえるのだろうが。

フランス大使館のホームページ
では、これが今日国連の「世界人権宣言」
にも繋がる絶対王政から共和制への
歴史的転換点だと紹介している。
アンシャン・レジームの終焉の
契機であり我々が生きている
民主主義体制の始まりの事件。
7月4日はアメリカ合衆国の
独立記念日だし、7月の前半は
民主主義づいているな～
と感じている。さて日本では？

その7月Julyはローマ帝国の
ユリウス・カエサルが自分の
名前を無理やり暦に入れて
しまったという話を昔
どこかで読んだ。それに続いて
アウグスツスも8月Augustを強引
に暦に入れてしまった。
そのおかげで、10という意味の
’Dec'がついた本来10月の
December が12月という事に
なったという。ほんとかな。

ジャック・ブレルの歌を
聴いていたら7月14日という
歌詞があって、こんなことを
連想してしまった。

Le 14 juillet means July 14 in French.

which was then the prison of the
political criminals and released
the prisoners. This case was
taken as the start of Franch Revolution.
In Japan, chanson singers celebrate

so man people might think it just

this is one of the biggest event
overthere.

According to the website of
French Embassy in Japan, it is introduce
as the historical turning point
from the Absolute Monarchic
Government to Republican Government
which then lead to the UN World
Declaration of Human Rights today.

This is the day when the ending of
Ancient Regime started and
the beginning of the widespreading
of democracy which we live in
today. As July 4 is US Independence
Day which is another symbol of
Democracy, so July is full of important
democracy event, great change month
in another word. So is it in Japan?

Speaking of July, Julius Caesar
is said to have put his name
in calender as 7th month of
the Roman calender year
and so did Augustus as 8th
month of the year.Therefore
10th month which starts with
'Dec' meaning 10 was forced to
mean 12th month as December.
Is this a true story?

These pieces of things I remembered
as I listened to the songs of Jack
Brel one of which had the word
'le 14 juillet.'

2週間ほどで30センチほども
草が伸びたので、あちこち
の畑の草刈り。

草刈りの時は乗用草刈機
に乗りながら畑の様子をよく
見れる。もちろん作業をしていれば
それ以上にいろいろと気づいて
考えることが多いのだが。

さすがに草が30センチほども
深いと途中で猫が飛び出して
来たり、雉の親子連れが
逃げ惑ったりと予期せぬもの
に驚かされる。

一時ほどではないが
ブイブイも今年は多いような気が
する。小さいコガネムシのようだが、
体調1センチくらいでブイブイという。
これがなかなか食欲旺盛で、若い
やわらかい葉っぱを中心に結構
食べてしまう。今まではもっぱら
捕殺していたが、畑の生物
多様性の観点からは、これも
ある程度は必要なのかな、
などと思いながら、少々の
食害には目をつぶっている。

As the weed grows more than one foot
in two weeks, I have to mow them in
many vineyards.

I enjoy riding mower recently as
I can find out something different
in the vineyards. Of course, I can
find more while I am working in there.

Today, a cat came out of the weed
suddenly and the pheasant family are
running away here and there all of which
made me startled as I had not expected
at all.

I found many small beatles on the
leaves this year. They are acutually not
real beatles and called 'bouy bouy' phonetically.
They have very big appetite and sometimes
make serious damage to the leaves. They seemed
to like young soft leaves especially.

I have caught to squash whenever I found them
before but now I admit they may be necessary
for biodivesity in the vineyard and I
tend to neglect them now as long as the
damage to the leaves are severe.

約1月前に緑枝接木をした
セミヨンとピノ・ノワール。
うまくついたものもあれば
つかなかったものもある。

(うまくいった緑枝接木。
台木は3309, 穂木はピノ・ノワール。
台木の芽は全て掻く。）

（失敗例。穂木が壊死して台木の芽が伸びている）

やはり細い枝は難しい。
台木と穂木と同じくらいの
太さで、穂木の樹勢が強い
組み合わせが成功する確立が
高い様だ。

台木の樹齢が2年目くらいの
ものが多いので、6月初めでは
やはり新梢が細くでそれに
あう穂木を不定枝から見つけるのが
難しい。

I did green grafting of Semillon
and Pinot Noir one month ago.
Some are sccessful and others are not.
I felt happy to find many successful
grafting today.

Grafting of slender shoot is not
easy. Both rootstock and scion
in the same diameter and the vigorous
scion seem the best combination.

As my rootstocks are only one year old
and have only slender shoots in June
so I had difficulties to find out
suitable suckers that I used for
grafting.

レースウィング、
レースクイーンと語感が
似ているけど、大分違う。
レースの羽、なかなか
ですな。はかない命や
華奢な感じがそこはかとなく
しています。

巨峰の畑でフラフラと飛んで
いました。巨峰の房についた
卵もよく見かけます。
ちょっとみると、何かの
胞子みたいですが。

成虫となってからの命は
一日に満たない種類も
いるらしい。

In Japanese it sounds like
race queen, young girls
mostly wear vikini to cheer
up car race event, but it is
totally different. How poetic
it sounds, wing made by lace.
It reminds me of its delicate
body and short life.

I found one in my Kyoho
vineyard flying weakly
from one bunch to another.
I often find eggs, too.
It looks as if it were a
kind of spore.

The adult racewing has very short
life and there is one having
life less than just one day.

いろんな問題があるのはわかっていますが、
誰かの目にとまってどう発展するかな、
なんてね。

果物の輸出の難しさは、
害虫と残留農薬の問題があり、
一度引っかかると、当該会社からの
輸入停止のみならず、同一地域や県、
更に日本からの全面輸入停止という
措置がとられるので、全輸出者に
対する責任問題に発展しかねない。
青森のりんごから台湾で登録が無い
農薬が検出されて（一度ならず複数回）、
国としての対応策を求められたという
経緯がある。

My produce are on the list that
Ministry of Agriculture,fishery and forest
made it public to the potential importers.

I know there are many problems regarding the
export of agricultural products but I wonder
what will happen.

The difficulties of fruit export lie
mainly on the pests and residual chemicals.
Once pest or chemical is found, the import
will be banned not only to the exporter only
but it will be extended to the export from
the area and finally from Japan. Therefore
one might be responsible for all the
exporters of the same produce. Last year
unauthorized residula chemcal was found
in Aomori apple in Taiwan for a few times
and the Japanese government was requested
to take measures to control such inccident.

Also the grapes and apples are raw.

梅雨のせいかな。
雨の中の作業は下着まで「じっく」
になる。だからという訳では
ないのだが…。

「王道」はどうですか
小池百合子さん。ラジオの
ニュースだったか、彼女の
演説で「わが自民党は王道を
堂々と行くんです」とか何とか。
さぞ威風堂々たる立派な方達が
行くような道の積もりか。
昔ユークリッドが
「幾何学に王道なし」と
言ったらしい。学問するのに
簡単な方法、近道なんかない
からみんなちゃんと勉強しようね
ということだと書いてあったような。
言葉は変遷するのだけれど…。

雨のせいでスリッパリーな畑で
足を踏ん張り行う作業の一秒
一秒の積み重ね。農業に
ショートカットは無いですね。

You may use this word which sounds
like an English word to describe
a slippery rainy football field.
You can use a Japanese expression for
it. As you speak on the TV, please
care more about what you say.

Royal road (?)
Ms. Yuriko Koike, I heard you shout
on the radio news the other day,
''We, LDP will go on the Royal Road
as the ruling party...'' Do you mean
such a road as dignified people would
march. It should be a straight road
indeed. Once upon a time, Euclid
was said to tell that there was no
short cut to the geometry. So we,
as the student at that time, had
to work hard but never be lazy...
I know the meaning of word change
from time to time, though.

The vineyard was slippery and we had
to stand firm to continue each operation.
The continuous seconds of such operation
only can produce the result.There is no
short cut in agriculture.

友人が送ってきてくれた
写真。　北岳草という。
南アルプスの北岳にしか自生
していない珍しい植物。
世界でも校庭くらいの面積ほど
にしかないのだという。
北岳に登った際に撮ったとの事。

この北岳草、昔は白根草といわれた
とか。花の名前を聞かれた
人が「知らねえ草」と答えたから
だとか？

北岳は日本で2番目に標高の高い
山で、今も毎年少しずつ標高が
高くなっているらしい。
例の太平洋プレートと
大陸プレートの関係？

またまた別の知人が教えてくれたこと。
エルヴィスが私の好きな歌
「明日に架ける橋」を
歌っていると！　うそーと思ったが
本当だった。ＣＤに入っていた。
聴いてみた。聴かなくてもよかった。

One of my younger friends sent me
a photograph of Kiadakesou. It
is grown only in Kitadake Mountain
in South Apls in Japan. The total
area is limited to the size of
a school yard. He took that photo
when he climbed the mountain.

Kitadake-sou was once called as
Shirane-sou as somebody when asked
the name of the plant replied
'I don't know.' which sounds like
a name of a plant.

Did you know that the Kitadake Mountain
is the second highest mountain in Japan
after Mount Fuji. And even today the
mounatin grows higher by 5mm every year
due to the effect of Pacific Plate and
Eurasia Continet Plate.

The other friend taught me that
Elvis Presly sang my favorite song
Bridge Over Troubled Water!
She must be kidding! But it was
true. She rented me his CD.
Yes he sang the song which I should
not have listened to.

今日から巨峰の摘粒開始。
ようやくというところ。
といっても、肝心の作業は
お手伝いの方々に任せて
私は摘房。

房切り後1反分当たり2万房程度
できている葡萄の房を最大でも半分
にするのだが、私の場合ここで
3000程度にするので、1万7千房ほど
落とすことになる。
この時期いつも死屍累々という言葉
を思い出す。

摘房されて、地面に落ちた房が
そんな感じに見えるからなのだが
…。　どんな果物でもそうなのだが、
摘果され地面に帰る幼果の
使い道があればねえ。

I have all the way begun berry thinning
today. But I leave the operation to the
helpers and I have to finish bunch
thinning first of all.

After bunch forming in early June, there are
around 20,000 bunches per 0.1ha of standard
Kyoho vineyard. At bunch thinning the number
is reduced to at maximun 10,000. In my case,
I will reduce it to aroudn 3,000 per 0.1ha
which means I have to drop around 17,000
bunches. This operation always reminds me of
the word Sisi-ruirui which means piles
of dead bodies.

The removed bunches on the ground sometime
seem dead lives. Whenever I see the baby
fruit removal in fruit growing, I wonder
if there is any way to make use of such
removed baby fruit.

杏で有名な千曲市の
森と倉科地区で杏を
生産している北條さんが
自宅にジャム工場を建てて
造った自家栽培・手造りの
杏ジャム。

杏の品種は
「平和」というジャム向きの
品種で、ご自身で栽培した
果物だけに、完熟杏と砂糖だけしか
使わず果物そのものの食感と味が

東京のデパートでも売っている
某有名ジャム工場も北條さんの
杏を仕入れて造ったジャムを
本人の写真入りで売っています。

また自宅近くにアカシアの
大木が何本もあり、そこで
取った蜂蜜の瓶詰め。

いずれも今年採れた杏と蜂蜜
から造られています。

北條さんとは去年地元の
ラフランスでジャムを作って
もらってからコラボしてます。
売り切れ御免の貴重品を
楠ヴィニヤーズから販売します。

休日の朝、ちょっと贅沢な
朝食にどうぞ。

Mr.Hojo who grows apricots in
Mori and Kurasina both of which
are famous for apricot flowers
in Spring and he built his own
jam factory at home and makes
jams.

He grows various variety of
apricots and the 'Heiwa (Peace)'
is used for jam making at the
moment. This variety is very much
suitable for jam. As he grows the
fruit, he only uses the ripe fruit
and sugar with no additives at all.
So you can enjoy the texture,
taste and flavor of the fruit.

A famous jam factory which sell their
jams at the famous department stores in
Tokyo also use his fruit and sell
with his photograph.

There are many big acacia trees around
his house and he makes honey from these
acacia flowers,too.

Both apricot and honey are picked
and collected this year.

I have been collaborating with Mr.Hojo
since last year when I asked him to make
La France pear jam of which fruit I got here
locally. La France pear jam was sold out
before I announced of the release.

These jam and honey are available from
Kusunoki Vineyards webshop. Only limited
numbers are released.

your relaxing time with these produces.

横浜中華街で買い食いといえば
豚まん。1個350円。あそこで
売っているというだけでこの値段
が妥当なのかどうか？

大きい事は大きいけど。ヤマザキの
肉まんの方がうまいかな～？
中華街のはどこも冷凍で仕入れて
蒸かしているだけのようにも見えて…。
どの店のも同じような…。

皮が厚い。イーストを使ったおやきの
中身が肉の餡に変わっただけのように
しか見えない。黄金シャモのおやきの
方がうまくないか？
特段ジューシーでもないし。空腹で
食べた割には美味く感じなかったな～。

此方は東京駅大丸で売っていた
ナガノパープル。JA須高のタグがついて
いる。店で箱出しして、クッションをつけて
ビニールで包んで「長野産」のシールを貼った
のか、生産者がやったのか。
一房3,150円。隣の山梨産種無し巨峰
が1,800円くらいだった。
農家の手取りが3分の1だとして、
生産者はハッピーなんだろうか。
JA須高のタグがついているからには
市場向け出荷された物なのかな。
生産者名が確認できなかったのは
残念でした！

Isn't the pork bun famous in
Yokohama China Town, is it?
They sell at 350yen per piece.
Is this price justifiable only because
it is sold overthere?

It is big indeed but I remembered a
pork bun made by Yamazaki which might be
tastier than this. Those buns in China Town
seem all same that were bought frozen from
a few sources and steamed at each shop.

The skin was so thick. It reminds of an
Oyaki around here which was made with
yeast. I found the Oyaki with Shinshu
Golden Shamo(chiken) tasted better with
very charcteristic ingredients.
The bun was not so juicy and even was not
impressive to me even though I was hungry.

This is the Nagano Pruple grape at Daimaru
department store at Tokyo Station. It has the
tag of JA Sukho. The bunch was taken out from
the conatier box and must have been cushioned,
wrapped and tagged as Made in Nagano. The sale
price was 3,150yen per bunch. The seedles
kyoho grape from Yamanashi next to them was priced
as about 1,800yen per bunch. Was the JA tagged
Nagano Pruple grape shipped to the market in Tokyo?
The producer name was not identified. Only if
I found it, I should have been able to
check many things about the grape.

みなとの街にある
マリンタワーを貸し切って
ワインＶ（ファイブ）の会主催による
マリンタワー・ワールド・ワインパーティー
が7月3日夕刻開かれた。協賛ワインとして
Merlot/Cabernets 2007を出したので
視察がてらお手伝いに行ってきた。

開場前にそばにある中華街を初めて歩く、
港も中学校の修学旅行以来の
全くのおのぼりさんでした。
ハイ展望台にも昇りました。

世界から134種類以上800本以上の
ワインが並んだ。中にはリッジや
有名なシャンパン等高価なワインも
多々あった。一方、お手ごろ価格のワインが
多かった印象もある。
会費が1万円ということもあり、
参加されたお客様のワインに関する意識が高く
私も厳しいご意見を頂きました。また、
他のワイナリーの方と話したり、
私のワインを通販で購入して
くれたお客様とお会いしたり、
なかなか有意義な時間を過ごさせて
頂きました。

9時頃には雨も降り始め
馬車道あたりも濡れていたような。

Marine Tower World Wine Party was held
at Mrine Tower in Yokohama last night.
As I supplied my Merlot/Cabernets 2007 with the party,
I went there to see the party and help
serving wines to the guests. The gathereing
was organized by Wine Five which is an organization
to promote wines in Japan to the consumption level
of five litre per capita from current two litre.

The famous China Town was nearby so I visited
there for the first time. I came around here
for the first time since I had been a junior
high student long time ago. I went up to the
viewing terrace of the tower for the first
time in my life.

At the wine party, there were over 134 kinds
of wines totaling over 800 bottles from all
over the workd including famous Ridge and
Champagnes. Howevere there were also many
reasonably priced wine, too. As the admission
fee was 10,000 yen per person, the most of
the guests were wine lovers and were very
aware of wines and wineries,too. I was
given some very severe comments to my wines.

Meanwhile, Igot to know the people
from domestic wineries and met my real
customer who had recently ordered my
wines through my web shop.

At around 9pm when the party was due to
close, it started drizzling and
the Yokohama streets at Bashamichi
area seemed to get wet.

今の巨峰畑はこんな感じ。
標準的な場合10アールあたり約2万房の
葡萄が着果している。一新梢に2房として。
これを形の良いほうを残して一枝一房にする
（摘房という）。
そして摘粒を行った後、良さそうな房を残して
最終的に約4000房に調整する（これも摘房）。
ただ、一枝一房にする時点で、後の作業を
考えて4000から5000房くらいにすることも
ある。また、房切りの段階で一枝一房に
してしまうこともあり、やり方は
色々だ。

ここ数日は雨模様だが、どの畑にも
雨の中合羽を着て人が出ている。
この摘房の作業だ。これを終わらせないと
摘粒作業に入れない。摘粒とは、一房一房の
粒の数を調整する作業で、これも
とんでもない手間が掛かる作業だ。
葡萄作りは、ホント労働集約型農業です。
非効率的農業ともいえますね。

Kyoho vineyards today look like this
picture now. In an average Kyoho vineyard
of 1000sqm, there are around 20,000 bunches
after bunch cutting or bunch forming at
flowering time. The number is reduce to
around half by dropping either bunch
on new shoots (new shoots have each two
baby bunches), that is, one bunch per
new shoot, bunch thinning.
Then after berry thinning,
the bunch number is adjusted to around
final 4,000 per 1,000sqm of vineyard.

Some people reduce the bunch number to
4000 to 5000 at the time of bunch thinning.
Other people even reduce the number to
one bunch per shoot at the time of
flowering. So there are many ways to
reach final number.

In these few days, there are many people
in kyoho vineyards in the rain by wearing
rain gear. Everybody is doing bunch thinning.
That is because we have to finish this operation
before berry thinning, which is the operation
to adjust the berry number per bunch. You can
easily imagine how minute and tedious it is, or
you can never imagine such work on earth for
just a table grape.

Grapegrowing is really a labour intensive
work, and a very inefficient agriculture.

巨峰の結実がはっきりしてきた。
今年はあまりよくないようだ。
単為結果と花流れ（花ぶるい）が
同時に起きている。

ふるった房。通常は35粒は必要です。

単為結果というのは、通常の種有りの
粒のほかに種無しの粒（大きくならない）が
混在している状態。種無しができるのは
受粉しなかったり受粉してもその後の
細胞分裂が正常に進まずに、種ができず
それゆえに粒が大きくならないのだ。
開花期の低温や強剪定によりおきやすい。

花流れもしくは花ぶるいというのは、
やはり開花期の気象状況等によって
おこるのだが、此方は正常に受粉しない
せいだろう、房の軸に粒が残らないで、
だらりとした房になってしまうのだ。
開花期に雨が降るとよく起きる現象だ。

だらっとしているから「だら房」ともよびます。これが
「ながれた」状態。

いづれも微量元素の欠乏によっても
起こるらしいが、今年はやはり天気が
原因だろう。暑すぎたり、ちょっと涼しく
なったりしたからな～。

いらない房を整理しているところだが、
十分な粒がついた房がどれだけ残るか。
今年は巨峰にとっては厳しそうだ。

Now I can tell the fruit set of
Kyoho grape this season. It dose
not look good at all. Abnormal fruit
set seems to be happening. Hen & Chiken
and less berry set are seen eleswhere.

Hen and Chiken is the name of the
bunch with normal seeded berries and
smaller seedles berries. The seedels berries
do not grow big enough. The chiken berries are
caused by the abnormal pollenation or abnormal
cell division after pollenation. It is often
caused by the low tempearture at flowering
and severe pruning.

Hana-nagare or Hana-burui is the name of the
bunch with less berries which may be caused by
abnormal weather conditions at flowering especially
when it rains.

Both phenomena can be caused by certain element
defficiency,too. But it may be because of
abnormal weather this year. It was sometimes very
warm one day and it got cooling another day
at around the flowering period.

Now I am adjusting the bunch numbers in the
Kyoho vineyards hoping to have enough number
of bunches with enough number of seeded berries.
In any case, it could be a hard year for
Kyoho growers.
